Heirloom Seeds

We support the non-profit Seed Saver’s Exchange (SSE) in Decorah, IA and their endeavors to preserve equitable public access to the life-giving seed.  Here, we showcase some of their offerings.  Each packet of seed includes detailed planting instructions.   You may order ANY Seed Saver’s Exchange Seed offered through the SSE catalog or website (www.seedsavers.org) through us...and you’ll save $.10 per pack!  Simply add an “S” prefix to their catalogue code on our order form and indicate the variety name.   Pick-up your seeds at the shop or request that we ship them to you in April for an additional $3.50 shipping charge.      $2.65 per packet

‘Chioggia’ Introduced to early Victorian gardens from Italy, this beautiful beet produces alternating deep red and white concentric rings that appear to form a bulls eye when sliced.  Tender, sweet.  Excellent for fresh eating and pickling.  100 seeds. #S345

Carrot Seed

 

‘Danver’s Half-Long’ Since 1871 gardener’s have favored this bright orange, sweet and tender, nearly coreless carrot!  Uniform 6-8” by 2” taproots yield well even in clay or heavy soils. Stores well into winter.  #S357

Dragon Carrot ‘Dragon’  The sweet/spicy flavor of this stunning carrot is only half the pleasure.  Deep purplish outer skin masks yellowish-orange interior!  250 seeds.  #S1190
Oxheart Carrot  ‘Oxheart’ Also called ‘Guernade’ this variety dates to 1884.  Plump taproots can easily each weight over 1 pound,  reaching 5-6” in length and measure 3-4” in diameter.   25 seeds.  #S862

‘Golden Bantam’ Introduced by Burpee in 1902, this variety produces long ears and tender kernels perfect for freezing and eating fresh.  100 seeds. #S367

Japonica Striped Maize Corn  ‘Japonica Striped Maize’ Beautiful ornamental variety. Variegated leaves sport green, yellow, white and pink stripes.  25 seeds.  25 seeds. #S616 
Mandan Bride Corn ‘Mandan Bride’  An heirloom from the Mandan Indians of the upper mid-west, these plants bear beautifully striped kernels.  Excellent for fall displays or for grinding into corn meal.  Kernels range from yellow, orange and red to deep burgundy and black. 100 seeds.  #S1355

Cucumber Seed

Armenian Cucumber

‘Armenian’ Surprisingly, this is actually a melon that is used as a cucumber!  Long yellow to light-green fruits with tapered ends are heavily ribbed for an extraordinary texture and appearance.  Mild flavor, delicate skin and easily digestible.   Trellis for best shaped fruits.  50 seeds.  #S1357

‘Early Fortune’  In just 55 to 60 days, this heirloom  will produce sweet 7 to 8” long, 2” diameter fruits.  Tender.  #452-1 single plant; #452-4 four starts; #452-6 six starts. 
Japanese Climbing Cucumber ‘Japanese Climbing’ Introduced into American gardens in the late 1800s, this cuke displays vigorous growth and is perhaps the best variety for trellising, with strong grasping tendrils.  Light green fruits 7-9” long by 3” in diameter.  Excellent for slicing or pickling.
Miniature White Cucumber  ‘Miniature White’ Our favorite heirloom produces an abundance of tender white fruits on vines that typically do not extend beyond 3’.  No peeling needed.  Sweet!   50 seeds.  #S918

‘Ailsa Craig’ A straw-yellow onion for fresh use.  A Victorian cross between Danver’s Yellow and Cranston’s Excelsior, the variety is named after a small island off the coast of England.  Consistently large and solid. 100 seeds.  #S392

Red Baron Onion Sets  A fine maroon-red variety with a teardrop shape  and mild flavor.  Perfect for fresh use in salads and on sandwiches.  Matures to 3” onion with good storage qualities.  100 sets will yield approximately 15-20 pounds of mature onions.
